About Bristol
The city of Bristol, which has the sixth largest population of cities in England, was founded officially in the twelfth century, and received its status as a county in the fourteenth century. Began as a Roman settlement, the city developed into a center of industrial growth, but was severely damaged during World War II. The Bristol city centre was later rebuilt. Despite this damage, Bristol is still widely known for its varied array of architecture, which is thought to include structures from each major period of British architecture, dating back to the thirteenth century.
The city culture is fairly vibrant, and Bristol has been ranked as the most sustainable city in the United Kingdom. Bristol is also an area well-known for it's music and theatre cultures, with many popular bands originating in its music venues.
Two major universities are located in Bristol: the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. The campuses of these two institutions have become major landmarks within the city.
